What if I am not a WVU undergraduate student?

Tuition and Fees vary by academic college.

Can I pay by credit card?
WVU accepts VISA, Mastercard, and Discover as well as personal checks and money orders.

Why must I pay an off-campus fee?
Extended Learning students are charged a state-mandated fee ($40 per credit hour) reflecting the cost of bringing courses and programs to you at convenient times and locations. However, Extended Learning students do not pay fees associated with on-campus activities such as athletics and the student recreation center.

What fees do I pay when taking a course outside of my college?
You will be assessed for the fees associated to your college major. (For example: If you are majoring in Ag & Forestry but taking a B&E course, an Ag & Forestry fee will be added to your bill for the B&E course.)

What are the fees associated with an undergraduate course that is tuition waived?
The undergraduate level course that has the tuition waived is still assessed a $40 per credit hour off-campus fee (i.e. $99 for a 3-hour course). If the student is not a current WVU student, an additional $15 will be charged to process the guest pass application.

What is the Regional Incentive Fee process?
The Regional Incentive Fee plan was enacted to lessen the costs of tuition and fees for certain degree programs in specific out-of-state locations.

How can I receive a copy of my latest tuition and fees bill to give to my employer for reimbursement?
You can get the latest account information through STAR. For directions, please visit the billing page.

My employer will pay my tuition and fees directly. How do I make arrangements for them to receive a bill?
Your employer can make arrangments through Extended Learning to pay the bill. Go here for directions.

How can I find out about financial aid?
To speak with a financial aid counselor, call the WVU Financial Aid Office toll free at 1-800-344-WVU1 or go online at http://www.wvu.edu/~finaid/. You can also visit the WVU Foundation's Private Scholarship Web Page at http://domino.wvuf.wvnet.edu/fundsch.nsf

How many hours do you have to carry to receive financial aid?
Determination of eligibility for financial aid is complex. A financial aid counselor can help you sort it all out. An essential requirement is admission to a degree program.

What is considered a full-time off-campus graduate student?
A graduate student is classified as full-time if enrolled for nine or more hours in the fall or spring semesters. Full-time status during summer term requires a total of six hours be taken during the summer sessions.

What do I have to do to take a graduate course?
First, you must be accepted by WVU for graduate study. Complete the WVU Application for Graduate Admission to apply electronically. Submit your application with a $50 non-refundable fee to WVU Admissions and Records. Have the Registrar of your undergraduate college submit an official transcript to the same Admissions and Records address. (NOTE: If you are a WVU alumni, your transcript is on file in Morgantown.) Certain degree programs impose additional requirements for admission; e.g., letters of reference, statement of professional interest, GRE or GMAT score, etc. It is the applicant\'s responsibility to learn about and fulfill all degree admission, requirements.

What do I need to do to take an undergraduate course?
If you are an undergraduate student at WVU, register for an Extended Learning course as you would any other WVU course. You will have to pay the off-campus fee associated with a course. If you wish to become a WVU undergraduate student, get application information from the Office of Admission and Records.

Where do Extended Learning Courses meet?
Courses are offered in high schools, colleges, and local business operations that are conveniently located around the state. Many courses are also available via the Internet.

What classes count for teacher certification or renewal?
All teachers should check with both their county certification representative and the state certification office. Please keep records of dates and contact persons you talk with. Call the State Department of Education-Division of Certification at 1-800-982-2378.

Do Extended Learning courses count the same on my WVU transcript as on-campus WVU classes?
Yes. Extended Learning classes are identical to the WVU classes taught on campus. The transcript does not indicate the format or location of course delivery. The only important difference is the convenience of time and location enjoyed by the student.

Can a 900-level class (professional development) be counted towards a master's degree?
No. Professional Development classes are not part of a regular degree program at West Virginia University. Professional Development 900 - level courses may qualify as graduate credits for West Virginia teacher certificate renewal and salary upgrade with prior approval.

How do I know if distance learning classes are right for me?
The Southern Regional Electronic Board has an excellent website http://www.electroniccampus.org/AdultLearner/Attend/am_i_ready.asp that gives you tips on being successful in an online class. There is also a little quiz you can take to see if you are ready for distance learning. If you have questions about specific WVU courses, please contact the Extended Learning call center.

Where can I find general information for my online class?

How can I find out about online classes at other schools?
The West Virginia Virtual Learning Network lists courses available at most colleges and universities in the state.

How can I tell if a course is on or off-campus?
A course section code can give the student that information. It indicates city, county, and whether the tuition for the course is waived. (Example: If it the course section code is 8FA, it would be in the Kanawha Valley. If the last digit is a letter of the alphabet, this indicates that the tuition is waived for that course). A number as the last digit represents a course for which tuition is regular tuition and fees (Example: 8F1). Here is a complete list of section codes.

A cohort is group of students who progress together through a program of study. Students who are members of a cohort must meet the same entrance criteria as those entering the on-campus program.

Do you offer financial aid?
There are loan programs available with the Gatlin Education Services courses. Please go to www.gatlineducation.com to learn more about these loan programs. Also accepted are checks from Employer Assistance Programs. Checks should be made out to West Virginia University. No other financial aid assistance or tuition waiver is accepted for non-credit courses.

How do I sign up for classes?
Students who are admitted to WVU can register for classes on the web at http://star.wvu.edu. Follow these instructions. Students who are not admitted but want to take Professional Development (900 - level) classes or an undergraduate class on a guest pass should call 1-800-2LEARN2 or e-mail exlearn@mail.wvu.edu.

How do I register for a non-credit course?
Students can register for non-credit courses several times during the year. Go to our website at https://eservices.wvu.edu/elearn/ to register and pay online or mail this application form(PDF file) with a check made out to West Virginia University.

How will I know that my registration has been processed?
The student will receive an email from WVUEnrich@mail.wvu.edu confirming the registration and payment whether paid online or by check.

What is the cost of a non-credit course(s)?
Navigate to the course page(s) from www.elearn.wvu.edu/Continuing or go to our registration page at https://eservices.wvu.edu/elearn

How long will it take for me to complete a non-credit course?
Most of the non-credit courses are self-paced within a six month timeframe. The average time for course completion is noted in the course description on the registration page https://eservices.wvu.edu/elearn/

How many courses may I take at a time?
You choose from one course to as many as you like. Keep in mind that each course has specific objectives and requirements for completion so you may want to pace yourself accordingly. Are there particular class times when I must be online for the course(s)?
You may work on-line at times of your own choice. You decide if you participate first thing in the morning or late at night. Reports show that peak times for online students are between 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m

Can I complete all course work from my home or is there any required time on site?
All online course work may be done from your home. You have no requirement to come to an on site location unless designated on the course page or by the instructor. On-site courses or class observations will be designated on the course page www.elearn.wvu.edu/Continuing

What does the start date and end date mean on the registration page?
The start date is when the student can register for that term. The end date is the latest a student should register for that term in order to finish the course. Note the average course completion time noted in the course description https://eservices.wvu.edu/elearn/

How do I get a WVU transcript?
Admissions and Records can provide you with official and unofficial transcripts. If you are a current student, you can get a copy of the transcript through STAR.

How do obtain a student identification card?
Extended Learning staff often take photos for Mountaineer cards at regional information sessions. You can also visit the WVU campus. If you cannot travel to campus, there is a non-photo card option. For details see Mountaineer Card Services.

What is my WVU Student Identification Number?
In the past students' social security numbers were used for the student I.D. Due to a change in federal law, students will be issued a new I.D. number. For details, visit policies.
