FAQ

Who should I contact at Extended Learning with a general question?

Faculty members and/or students may contact Extended Learning’s Customer Service Center at elearn@mail.wvu.edu or by calling 1-800-2LEARN2 (1-800-253-2762) or 304-293-2834 Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. You may also want to consult theExtended Learning Staff Directory to determine the appropriate person to handle a more specific request.

Why do I need my WVU ID and where can I find it?

Effective July 2004, WVU moved away from using Social Security Numbers to uniquely identify individuals and established the WVU Central ID System to provide a more secure data environment and to meet federal regulations.  Each employee is assigned a unique number often referred to as a “700” number since it starts with those digits.  You can Find Your WVU ID  with verification by visiting this website.

What is MIX and how do I access it?

MIX stands for Mountaineer Information Xpress and is the main portal for faculty/students to check e-mail, register for courses, and stay informed about university events. Each student and faculty member is issued a MIX account automatically by Admissions & Records. To access your MIX (email) account, please follow the steps below:

  • Please visit http://www.mix.wvu.edu
  • Enter your user name (this can be looked up in STAR) and your password. Your password is your day of birth and the last four digits of your 700 number. (If you were an instructor prior to July of 2004, your pin will be your day of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.) Press Enter
  • You can email your entire class, if you tell them how to use their MIX accounts.

What if I prefer to use a different email address to receive important communications?

If you prefer that a non-WVU email address be used by the Extended Learning Office, please communicate this directly to Extended Learning at elearn@mail.wvu.edu. This action will only change your email address for Extended Learning communications and does not affect other WVU electronic postings.

How can I access my class enrollment list and how should I handle discrepancies with the list?

  • Please visit http://star.wvu.edu
  • Click on STAR access
  • Click on Faculty & Advisor Login
  • Your User ID is your WVU identification number (700-000-000) and your pin number is your day of birth and the last four digits of your 700 number. (If you were an instructor prior to July of 2004, your pin will be your day of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.) Press Enter
  • Make note of your personal information; your MIX user name will be listed here.
  • View your class list of enrolled students. Check this periodically throughout the semester, especially before the end of the course.
  • If a student is not listed on the class list, and they submitted a registration form, advise the student to contact the Extended Learning office to identify why they aren’t enrolled.
Scenario 1: If a student attends class but is not shown on the class enrollment list, it is imperative that the student contact the Extended Learning Customer Service Center to enroll/research the issue. It is against WVU policy to have individuals sitting in class who have not registered and paid.
Scenario 2: If a student is on the enrollment list but has never participated, contact the Extended Learning Customer Service Center with the names of these students and the list will be updated accordingly.
Scenario 3: If a student states that they can’t access their online course through WVU eCampus, check the class list. If they are not properly registered, they are denied access to WVU eCampus.
*STAR can be accessed via MIX by clicking on the STAR tab.

How should I enter grade information for students?

Grade deadlines will be communicated to you via email by the Extended Learning office. The email will contain detailed directions on how to enter grades online into STAR (WVU’s student information system).

What should I do in case a class needs to be cancelled (inclement weather, illness, etc.)?

Instructors are asked to consider the safety of students and use sound judgment in addressing these situations. There is some flexibility for instructors to revise course instruction, and each department has the authority to outline specific procedures for handling such cases. For example, if the content of classes can be managed online or via another method, this may be an option. This policy should be communicated to your students and a communication plan should be established for each individual class (an email tree or phone tree). In addition, please communicate any class cancellations to the Extended Learning Customer Service Center so that student inquiries may be handled appropriately.

What should I do if I have technical problems with my accounts (email, WVU eCampus, etc.)?

For technical support please contact the Office of Information Technology Help Desk at (304) 293-4444.  Please be sure to indicate that you are affiliated with an Extended Learning course.

Where can I go to keep updated on important University dates?

The official WVU Admissions and Records Calendar is available online and provides important deadlines related to registration, schedules, exams, etc.

Who do I contact about classroom arrangements and/or technology needs (projectors, Internet access, etc.)?
