clean air and energy independence

Introduction

West Virginia University Extended Learning and the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC), a WVU/National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE) program, welcome you to this online course. This is the NAFTC’s premier training course which offers the opportunity to learn about alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and the role they play in energy independence and cleaner air.

This course is designed to provide basic information to a wide variety of audiences, from the automotive technician to the consumer.

Course Structure and Schedule

This is a non-credit course offered for 20 clock hours or 2.0 CEUs.  The student can register at any time during the year and should be able to complete the course within a 12-week period.  The instructor should be notified if an extension is required.  The course cost is $275 per registration, and a certificate for course completion will be issued to the student.

No prerequisites are required for the course.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the environmental impact of pollution caused by motor vehicles
  • Describe the consequences of U.S. dependence on foreign sources of oil
  • Recognize the efforts to legislate air quality at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Define the term “alternative fuel”
  • Discuss the sources, uses, advantages, and disadvantages of propane, natural gas, ethanol, methanol, synthetic fuels, biodiesel, battery-powered electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and fuel cells
  • State what actions must be taken in order to work toward clean air and energy independence.

Penalty Fee

For all students: A $50 penalty fee will be charged to the student that does not access or finish the course within the term dates allotted.
