To provide a more secure data environment and to meet federal regulations, West Virginia University has implemented a new WVU identification number in the STAR information system for students and faculty. The new 9 digit WVU ID will replace the current student and faculty ID number (Social Security Number). When corresponding with WVU administrative offices, it is very important to utilize the new WVU ID to assist staff with servicing your request.

Students and faculty accessing MIX will continue to utilize their MIX User Name to log in and click on the "STAR" tab to link to STAR Web. Beginning July 12, 2004, when accessing STAR Web directly without going through MIX, students and faculty can log in utilizing either their MIX User Name, new WVU ID, or the old ID number (SSN) as the User ID. Access to STAR Web utilizing the old ID number will be permitted only until August 1, 2005 during the transition period.

The MIX Password / STAR Web PIN will not change for current students and faculty. The default password for these accounts is 6 digits containing two digits for the day of your birthday and the last four digits of current ID (SSN).

Ex: If your birthday is May 3, 1974 and your Social Security Number is 123-45-6789 then your default password/PIN is 036789. If you have changed your PIN, it will not be reset to the default.

Beginning July 12th, the new WVU ID for students and faculty will:

1. Display on various screens in the STAR system.
2. Print on communications that previously displayed the SSN (invoices, schedules, class list, etc.)
3. Facilitate efficient communication when contacting administrative departments (Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Housing, Student Accounts, etc.).

Once again, please note until August 1, 2005 current students and faculty can continue to provide the SSN as the STAR User ID when logging into the system as well as their MIX User Name and new WVU ID.
