The need for advanced learning opportunities beyond Basic Parish Nurse Preparation has been identified. In order to meet that need, additional modules are being developed to serve in a complementary capacity to enhance and provide on-going educational and spiritual support for practicing nurses, and those seeking a greater understanding of faith, health, and wholeness.

Parish nursing is a recognized specialty practice that combines professional nursing and health ministry. Parish nursing emphasizes health and healing within a faith community. The parish nurse serves the faith community, creates safe and sacred places for healing, and advocates with compassion, mercy, and dignity.

This course is an overview of the competencies necessary for being a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and also of the concepts and skills required for carrying out effective health education programs in a variety of different settings. Although the emphasis of this course is to prepare students for the CHES Examination, it is also designed as a refresher course for current CHES-accredited individuals.

West Virginia University Extended Learning and the School of Nursing are offering this course in partnership to licensed Registered Nurses, Paramedics, and Health Care Providers who work with EKG monitors. This course has been offered in the past to traditional on-campus students, but now for the first time it is being offered to non-traditional, adult students.
