Background
This course has been offered as an elective to nursing students at West Virginia University for ten years. For the past five years, it has been offered as an on-line, self-paced course to traditional students. Since this course would be useful to anyone working with EKG monitors and can be completed on-line, we now offer it to non-traditional students.
Course Goal
The focus of this course is on the recognition and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain what an EKG is and what it measures.
- Identify EKG criteria specific to selected abnormal heart rhythms.
- Describe and discuss the treatment of selected arrhythmias using common anti-arrhythmic medications.
- Describe and discuss the treatment of selected arrhythmias using electrical modalities such as cardioversion, defibrillation and pacemakers.
Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course offered for 30 nursing contact hours. Cost is $150 per student. A certificate of course completion will be issued to the student.
Prerequisite(s)
This course is recommended for RNs (no experience necessary), Paramedics, and any Health Care Provider working with EKG monitors.

There are many books available on interpreting EKGs and treating arrhythmias. All have essentially the same information. If you wish to purchase a book, look for a price, size and style that fit your needs.

Methods of Student Evaluation
This is a self-paced course within the non-credit term in which the student registers. There are 7 quizzes that the student may take at any time. The student may retake them until they attain mastery of the material. The student must obtain 80% or higher on EACH quiz to complete the course.
