CCNA Discovery

West Virginia University Extended Learning and the Office of Information Technology offers CCNA Discovery to adults who are looking for career-oriented, IT-skills instruction or a quick path to job entry and career exploration.  The CCNA Discovery curriculum is a blended program with both online and classroom learning components.

4 Courses Within Program

SHORT TRACK AVAILABLE: Take 2 courses in a 6 month time frame. Courses must be taken sequentially.

Registrations for spring term will be accepted from November 5, 2007 to December 31, 2007.  Class access will be e-mailed to all registrants prior to the spring semester which begins on January 7, 2008.  The online portion of the class is self-paced, but all coursework needs to be completed by June 30, 2008.

On-site labs will be held one Saturday a month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during the spring term.  The lab dates are January 12, February 9, March 8, April 5, May 10, and June 7, 2008.  All students will need to report to the Cisco Training Lab at 5401 Waterfront Place, Morgantown, WV on those dates.

Background

CCNA Discovery provides a hands-on approach to learning networking skills.  It uses easy-to-follow labs to help students learn the general theory needed to build networks.  CCNA Discovery allows for quick application of learned concepts to encourage students to consider additional education in IT and helps prepare students for entry-level IT careers by teaching applied skills midway through the four-course series.  This course is for students with basic PC usage skills.

Target Audience

CCNA Discovery is primarily designed for students who are looking for career-oriented, IT-skills instruction or a quick path to job entry and career exploration.  Assistance in internship placement is available upon course completion.

Course Goal
After completing CCNA Discovery, students will be prepared to take the Cisco CCNA Certification Exam.

Course Objectives

By completing the course, the student will learn to:

  • Help students recognize the significant impact of networking on their lives.
  • Teach students how to build and support a home or small business network with Linksys equipment.
  • Instill a sense of awe in students and encourage them to learn more about how things work and to pursue careers in networking.
  • Prepare students for entry-level jobs in the industry by employing interactive and engaging instructional approaches that help them gain practical experience.
  • Teach students the fundamental concepts of networking.
  • Provide opportunities for extensive hands-on interaction with PC and networking equipment to prepare students for careers and certification exams.
  • Establish the relevancy and context of networking in our everyday lives.

Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course offered for 50 hours online and 20 hours in the classroom.  The student can register before the beginning of each term.  Cost is $585 per course/per student.  A certificate for course completion will be issued by Cisco Training Academy.

Prerequisite(s)

There are no specific prerequisites for this course other than an Internet connection and emailing capabilities.

Overview/Subject Matter

The CCNA Discovery curriculum is comprised of four courses.  Home and Small Business Networking is the first course, and is the prerequisite for the other three courses.  It is recommended that the courses be taken sequentially.

Course 2: Working at a Small-to-Medium Business or ISP

  1. The Internet and Its Uses
  2. ISP Support
  3. Planning a Network Update
  4. Planning the Address Structure
  5. Configuring the ISR
  6. Routing
  7. ISP Services
  8. ISP Responsibility

Course 3:  Introduction to Routing and Switching in the Enterprise (Release Date:  December 2007)

Course 4:  Designing and Supporting Computer Networks (Release Date:  December 2007
